FAQs

What does my engine oil do?

Motor oil must reduce friction by coating every moving part, and help keep an engine clean and cool. It must clean dirt, ash, soot, acids, and sludge that become baked onto engine parts and reduce performance and result in wear. Motor oil must also cool your engine. Only 60 percent of your engine’s cooling job is achieved by water and air. The extra 40 percent is cooled by motor oil.

Why do I need to change my oil?

Although motor oil technology has experienced many improvements, no oil can perform indefinitely. It eventually becomes contaminated with combustion by-products, dirt and water vapor, causing its chemical additives to wear out. Regular oil and filter changes prevent from damaging internal engine parts, and contribute to longer engine life.

Is it best to change the oil hot, after the engine has been running for a while, or cold?

It is best to warm the engine before changing the oil. This will ensure that contaminants contained in the oil are suspended and easily removed.
